I actually would not have been too surprised if the odds for a Mainz win were much longer here, as the relegation strugglers will need to perform to the very best of their abilities to have any chance of coming away from Dortmund with anything from this game. All the visitors can hope for is a Dortmund side giving up on the season.

Dortmund left it very late to beat Fortuna Dusseldorf at the weekend and continue the title race — at least theoretically — for another few days. Erling Braut Haaland’s stoppage time winner broke Dusseldorf hearts and kept his team seven points behind Bayern at the top of the table with three games to play.

That means that Die Roten just need to win its midweek game and the title stays in Munich once again. After such an enjoyable season, it is a shame that Dortmund could not keep the challenge going until the end of the campaign, but this is a side that will return even stronger next season.

Mainz is the club that really needs the points here, however unlikely that outcome actually might be. The 1-0 home defeat at the hands of Augsburg at the weekend has left Achim Beierlorzer’s side perilously close to the bottom three with only three points separating it from both Dusseldorf and Werder Bremen.

It would be a huge surprise if Mainz gets anything from this game, and that will leave the fixtures against Werder and Leverkusen to secure top-flight status. The Bremen game is the crucial one there, and it might not be a surprise if Mainz takes it easy against Dortmund to be completely ready for the game at the weekend.

There is just no way that Borussia Dortmund will lose this game, even with the league title virtually out of reach now. Robin Quaison might be a threat for the visitors, but there should be more than enough defensive talent to deal with the Swedish striker who has enjoyed a standout season in an underperforming team.
