Betting on Who Newcastle Will Sign in the Winter Transfer Window – Odds and Predictions

Following one of the highest-profile takeovers in the history of sport, Newcastle United is now among the richest soccer clubs in the world
With Newcastle’s majority shareholder, Public Investment Fund (PIF), boasting a reported collective wealth of £320 billion ($440 billion), the Toon Army anticipates plenty of activity during the upcoming transfer window.
But who will Newcastle sign in January?
The Magpies can, effectively, afford to buy any player on the planet. However, Lionel Messi isn’t likely to arrive on Tyneside anytime soon.
Or is he?
Many of the best soccer betting sites have released odds for players to sign for Newcastle. In this post, I will be breaking down the bookmakers’ prices and sharing my Newcastle transfer predictions.
Odds for Newcastle’s Potential Transfer Targets
Before we go any further, it is worth noting that this market is for players to sign for Newcastle before February 3, 2022. The winter transfer window opens on January 1 and closes on January 31.
As you can see, the bookies believe that James Tarkowski is the most realistic transfer target for Newcastle. The Burnley defender’s contract expires at the end of the season, meaning the Magpies could swoop in for a cut-price deal.
Other high-profile names like Jesse Lingard and Raheem Sterling are among the bookies’ favorites to join Newcastle. Gareth Bale and Paul Pogba are in the mix, too.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland are priced at 67.00 and 51.00, respectively. Although neither player is likely to team up with the Magpies, stranger things have happened, right?
Having assessed the Newcastle transfer odds, it’s time to take a closer look at which players could make us a tasty profit this winter.
Backing Newcastle to Sign Tarkowski Makes Perfect Sense
At this moment in time, Tarkowski is the out-and-out favorite to join Newcastle during the winter transfer window – and with good reason.
With the 28-year-old’s Burnley contract due to expire next summer, the Clarets run the risk of losing him for free at the end of the current campaign. If they cash in now, however, they will get a sizeable fee for the center-back.
Having amassed over 150 EPL appearances since 2016, Tarkowski would almost certainly slot straight into Newcastle’s backline and ease the team’s defensive struggles.
There has been plenty of talk in the English media linking Tarkowski to Newcastle. Given that you can more than double your money, backing him to join the Magpies makes perfect sense.
Would Coutinho or Dembele Swap Barcelona for Newcastle?
Not so long ago, the mere prospect of Coutinho or Dembele joining Newcastle was pretty much non-existent. Fast-forward to today, and it is a very real possibility.
At the peak of his powers, Coutinho was viewed as one of the best players in world soccer. The Brazilian made just over 200 appearances for Liverpool between 2013 and 2018, bagging 54 goals and 45 assists.
Since then, however, he has struggled for game time and Barca is reportedly looking for a move away from Camp Nou.
Dembele is another player who has failed to make the desired impact in Catalonia. Barca paid Dortmund a whopping €135 million to acquire his services in 2017, but he hasn’t been able to establish himself as a world-class star.
At 24, Dembele could be the perfect signing for Newcastle. He would be the main man at St. James’ Park, meaning he would be given time to unlock his undeniable potential.
If Newcastle wants to compete with the top clubs in England and become a superclub, then signing players of Coutinho and Dembele’s stature is a must.
Other Realistic Transfer Targets for Newcastle
Tarkowski is favored to join Newcastle during the winter transfer window, while Coutinho and Dembele are also viewed as potential signings. But let’s not forget that PIF has money to blow!
With a host of possible transfer targets in the mix, any number of players could move to Tyneside in January. So, let’s check out more potential transfer targets for Newcastle.
Jesse Lingard (10.00)
Jesse Lingard enjoyed a hugely successful loan spell at West Ham last season, notching nine goals and five assists in 16 outings. However, he returned to Manchester United to battle for a place in Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s team.
The 28-year-old has found minutes hard to come by this term, though, making just four substitute appearances in the EPL. With the following players ahead of him in the pecking order at Old Trafford, Lingard must be considering his options.
- Burno Fernandes
- Jadon Sancho
- Marcus Rashford
- Mason Greenwood
It is also worth pointing out that Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Man Utd has negatively impacted Lingard’s chances of cementing a spot in the starting XI.
With Lingard eager for game time – and Newcastle in the market for EPL-ready players – this is a transfer that could easily happen in January.
Alfredo Morelos (11.00)
Having made a name for himself north of the border, Alfredo Morelos deserves a shot at the Premier League. The Rangers forward recently notched his 100th goal in Scottish soccer – and he achieved that feat in less than 200 games!
Newcastle has just one top-class striker, with Callum Wilson leading the line. Allan Saint-Maximin is also an exciting forward, but the Magpies undoubtedly need reinforcements in attack.
Not only is Morelos a prolific goalscorer, but he is also a very realistic transfer target for Newcastle. Unlike some of the names of this list, Morelos could be persuaded to sign for a relatively small fee.
Raheem Sterling (13.00)
When Raheem Sterling recently announced that he would be open to a move away from Manchester City to get more game time, he instantly put himself on the radar of Europe’s elite clubs.
Given that Newcastle can now compete with the top teams in the transfer market, there is no reason why they can’t make a move for Sterling.
Although Spanish giant Real Madrid is the bookies’ favorite to sign Sterling, the Magpies will fancy their chances of luring the Man City winger to St. James’ Park.
Donny van de Beek (15.00)
You may have noticed that many players on this list need game time – and that is definitely the case for Donny van de Beek.
When the Dutchman joined Man Utd in 2020, many believed that he would become a key player for the Red Devils. But Solskjaer has continuously overlooked him and refused to give him minutes, despite the team’s struggles.
There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that van de Beek is desperate to leave Old Trafford in order to get more time on the pitch. With that in mind, Newcastle is the ideal destination for him to revive his career.
Gareth Bale (17.00)
Following a difficult period at Real Madrid, Gareth Bale enjoyed an eye-catching loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur last term – racking up 16 goals in 34 appearances across all competitions.
The 32-year-old reminded everyone of his undeniable talent last season, proving that he is still capable of scoring goals in the Premier League. But he returned to Spain at the end of the previous campaign and has failed to pick up where he left off in London.
Although Bale’s wage demands are huge, Newcastle can afford to pay him whatever he wants. If he is looking for a move back to England, then Newcastle could pounce.
Anthony Martial (21.00)
With Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani ahead of Anthony Martial in Solskjaer’s plans, the Frenchman will surely be open to a move away from Old Trafford.
Martial has made over 250 appearances for the Red Devils, bagging 79 goals and 50 assists along the way. He may have fallen out of favor in recent times, but Newcastle will be well aware of his impressive record.
Could Newcastle Make a Record-Breaking Transfer in January?
Although the Magpies have the funds to sign any player in world soccer, it will be difficult for them to sign a truly elite star during the upcoming transfer window.
Considering this is Newcastle’s first window as a competitive force in the transfer market, I don’t expect the club to sign a world-class player in January.
Kane, Mbappe, and Haaland are among the bookies’ favorites for the 2021 Ballon d’Or. While PIF would love to sign a player of that caliber, I think they will have to wait a year or two for that to happen.
Given PIF’s wealth, don’t be shocked if Newcastle makes a record-breaking bid for a world-class player in January.
Still, it is worth remembering that the Magpies are still in danger of relegation this season. Would the likes of Mbappe and Haaland want to be involved in a relegation battle? I don’t think so.
My Newcastle Transfer Predictions
I’m confident that Tarkowski will join Newcastle in January. With his contract running down, Burnley will be eager to cash in on the defender – and the Magpies are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements!
It feels like a match made in heaven, so backing Newcastle to sign Tarkowski at 2.20 is a no-brainer.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle signed one of Coutinho (7.00) and Dembele (7.00), too. I can’t see both Barcelona forwards moving the St. James’ Park, but there is no reason why the Magpies can’t sign one of them.
I really like the look of Morelos (11.00), too. Newcastle wouldn’t have to pay much to acquire his services, and the Colombian would certainly improve the team.
Of course, it is difficult to predict who Newcastle will sign in the upcoming transfer window. That said, there are plenty of options to choose from, so you should be able to make a profit in January.
There are no Newcastle names among the top ten highest paid EPL players right now. However, it is only a matter of time before the Magpies start handing their players astronomical salaries to compete with the top sides.
