Betting on the LA Dodgers 2021 Win Total – Over or Under?

After finally getting over the hump and winning the 2020 World Series, Dave Roberts heads into 2021 with perhaps his most potent roster yet. Ok, so the Dodgers lost Joc Pederson and Kike Hernandez – a couple of platoon players that wound up bolting in free agency. The consolation is that all of LA’s starters remain intact, and they added the reigning NL Cy Young award winner to an already loaded pitching staff.
The hands-down best team in baseball is the heavy favorite to repeat as champs, and they also top the list of 2021 MLB win totals.
If you want to bet on the Dodgers win total in 2021, you came to the right place. Let’s dig into where the value lies.
What’s the Los Angeles Dodgers Win Total in 2021?
- Dodgers Win Total: 101.5
For those of you who bet sports online, 101.5 is the current asking price. It’s a large number – six more wins than any other team’s total – but it’s a far cry from the hard stance that the Vegas casinos have taken.
Talk about trying to dissuade bettors from pouncing on the over, the oddsmakers at Caesars sportsbooks installed the Dodgers win total at a whopping 104.5 games.
That’s the highest MLB win total in more than 20 years.
A Quick Look at Recent Dodgers Records
Los Angeles has won the NL West eight years running. Their streak of posting a winning regular-season record dates all the way back to 2011.
Dodgers Regular-Season Records Since 2011 | |||
---|---|---|---|
Season | Wins | Losses | Winning % |
2020 | 43 | 17 | .717 |
2019 | 106 | 56 | .654 |
2018 | 92 | 71 | .564 |
2017 | 104 | 58 | .642 |
2016 | 91 | 71 | .562 |
2015 | 92 | 70 | .568 |
2014 | 94 | 68 | .580 |
2013 | 92 | 70 | .568 |
2012 | 86 | 76 | .531 |
2011 | 82 | 79 | .509 |
In fact, the Dodgers have ended the year above .500 in 18 of the 20 seasons since the turn of the century. Zeroing in on the past two years, LA’s winning % is a jaw-dropping 67.1%. If that number holds true in 2021, the Dodgers are on pace to win around 108 games.
Stating a Claim for the Over
This one’s easy. The Dodgers won 104 games in 2019. They added Mookie Betts in the offseason and improved to an extraordinary 43-17 mark in 2020. They surged into the playoffs and were spritzing champagne in October.
Looking incredibly stout heading into 2021, the Dodgers stole Trevor Bauer from under the Mets nose, luring the dominant right-handed pitcher to La La Land on a three-year deal.
“BauerOutage” joining a staff that includes Walker Buehler and Clayton Kershaw, not to mention the likes of Julio Urias, Dustin May, and David Price, means the Dodgers boast the preeminent rotation in the big leagues. To make life tougher on their opposition, LA also garnered the #1 spot in my 2021 MLB lineup rankings.
They have the best group of batters, the best collection of pitchers, and their recent pedigree says winning 102+ games is a cinch. Any more questions?
Stating a Claim for the Under
After extolling the best roster in Major League Baseball, I can’t sit here and pretend the Dodgers aren’t the best team in the league. Having said that, I can remind you how hard it is to win 102 games.
Since 1986, the Dodgers have only surpassed 95 wins twice. In 2018, nobody in the National League won more than 96 regular-season games.
A lot has to go right for the Dodgers to hit triple-digit victories, and that was when the NL West was considered the weakest division in baseball. The Padres are spending top dollar to try and keep up and appear to be officially “nipping on LA’s heels.” Arizona should also be better, not to mention, other teams around the National League are on a sincere uptick.
The Dodgers already had a target on their back – their payroll is nearly $50 million more than any other franchise in baseball. Winning the Fall Classic in 2020 won’t make their road in 2021 any easier.
Speaking of that road, have a quick peek at how many games the last two World Series champions have won in the year following their triumph.
- The Washington Nationals won the 2019 World Series. They finished 26-34 the following year and missed the Playoffs.
- The Boston Red Sox won the 2018 World Series. They finished 84-78 the following year and missed the Playoffs.
That should help keep the idea of “resting on your laurels” in perspective.
Los Angeles Dodgers Win Total Prediction in 2021
If you want to make some money on MLB win totals, I suggest hopping on a flight to Sin City now. As tremendously talented as the Dodgers are, pegging them to win at least 105 games is a bit too rich for my blood.
I’m more captivated that the under at Caesars cashes if the Dodgers register 104 victories.
Let me rephrase that.
As long as Los Angeles doesn’t do something they’ve only achieved once since 1953, a bet on the under wins.
Fortunately, I reside in Las Vegas and don’t have to worry about booking any airfare or hopping in my car for an extended commute. I can cruise down Flamingo and be at Caesars Palace in 22 minutes.
