Betting on the IPL Fair Play Award in 2021
When you think about betting on the IPL, what springs to mind?
Of course, the classic futures markets such as top run-scorer, leading wicket-taker, and outright winner are the popular options. But did you know that you can bet on the IPL Fair Play Award in 2021?
The Fair Play Award is given to the team with the best record of fair play at the end of each Indian Premier League season. The prize is decided by the umpires throughout the campaign and is effectively a non-cricketing award, meaning the teams’ performances and results are not taken into account.
Below, I cover all the ins and outs of the award, discussing the rules and past winners. I also share my predictions for the IPL Fair Play Award in 2021.
But first off, let’s take a look at the 2021 IPL Fair Play Award odds.
Latest 2021 IPL Fair Play Award Betting Odds
Here are the odds for the IPL Fair Play Award in 2021. The prices below are courtesy of Betway’s sportsbook.
Having won the Fair Play Award – and the IPL title – last season, Mumbai Indians are the bookmakers’ favorites to scoop the prize two years running. However, the odds are clearly very tight in this market.
Most teams are relatively evenly priced, although Rajasthan Royals head into the new season as the bookies’ Fair Play outsiders.
To make sense of 2021 IPL Fair Play Award odds, let’s assess the previous winners and also check out where each side ranked last year.
Previous Winners of the IPL Fair Play Award
Before we look at last year’s Fair Play leaderboard, let’s examine all the past winners of the award.
Overall Fair Play Rankings
As you can see from the table below, Chennai Super Kings have dominated the IPL Fair Play Award over the years – winning six of the 13 titles on offer. However, the Super Kings have failed to win any of their previous six.
Both MI and Sunrisers Hyderabad have two Fair Play Awards to their name, while Punjab Kings and RR have scooped the prize in the past. 2017 winners Gujarat Lions are no longer in existence.
|WINNERS OF THE IPL FAIR PLAY AWARD|
|2015||Chennai Super Kings|
|2014||Chennai Super Kings|
|2013||Chennai Super Kings|
|2011||Chennai Super Kings|
|2010||Chennai Super Kings|
|2008||Chennai Super Kings|
It is worth noting that three current Indian Premier League teams have never won the Fair Play Award – Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
When it comes to betting on the IPL Fair Play Award in 2021, don’t forget that each of those sides have featured in the Indian Premier League since its inaugural season back in 2008.
2020 Fair Play Leaderboard
To give us a better chance of winning our 2021 IPL Fair Play Award bets, let’s check out where each team ranked on last season’s leaderboard.
- Mumbai Indians
- Chennai Super Kings
- Kolkata Knight Riders
- Sunrisers Hyderabad
- Royal Challengers Bangalore
- Punjab Kings
- Delhi Capitals
- Rajasthan Royals
CSK came close to winning a seventh Fair Play Award last year, although MI ended up clinching the crown. At the other end of the standings, RR ranked last, while DC, PK, and RCB also finished in the bottom half.
As you would expect, last season’s rankings are reflected in the 2021 IPL Fair Play Awards odds.
How is the IPL Fair Play Award Decided?
As the name suggests, the IPL Fair Play Award is given to the team that shows the most consistent level of fair play throughout a single Indian Premier League season.
In other words, the prize is handed out to the side that displays the best sportsmanship and plays in the correct spirit of the game across the campaign.
Following every match, the two on-field umpires get together with the off-field umpire and score each team out of ten. The scoring system is based upon four factors.
- Playing within the spirit of the game – 4 points
- Respecting the opposition – 2 points
- Abiding by the laws of cricket – 2 points
- Respecting the umpires – 2 points
At the end of each season, the team with the best points-per-game average wins the Fair Play Award.
With four teams qualifying for the playoffs and other sides playing more matches than others, the points-per-game method is used as a fair way to determine the winner, as opposed to giving the award to the team with the most overall points.

IPL Fair Play Award Betting Tips
Unlike many of the other Indian Premier League futures, the Fair Play Award is difficult to predict.
When it comes to wagering on the winner of the Orange Cap or the Purple Cap, you can use the stats to help you make your predictions. But there is very little information to consider when betting on the IPL Fair Play Award.
Having said that, I believe there are a couple of key points to take into consideration before laying down your IPL Fair Play Award bets.
Consider the Team Captains
Captains play a huge role in cricket, and that leads to a lot of teams reflecting the views and characteristics of their captain.
For example, if a team is being led by a passionate and fiery captain, there is a possibility that his emotions could boil over. Conversely, a team led by a calm and composed captain is likely to remain within the spirit of the game and respect the opponents and umpires.
|IPL TEAM CAPTAINS IN 2021|
|Chennai Super Kings||MS Dhoni|
|Delhi Capitals||Rishabh Pant|
|Kolkata Knight Riders||Eoin Morgan|
|Mumbai Indians||Rohit Sharma|
|Punjab Kings||KL Rahul|
|Rajasthan Royals||Sanju Samson|
|Royal Challengers Bangalore||Virat Kohli|
|Sunrisers Hyderabad||David Warner|
Guys like MD Dhoni (CSK) and Eoin Morgan (KKR) are known for taking a measured approach to the game. Dhoni has captained more IPL matches than any other man, while Morgan has showed excellent leadership skills while leading England’s one-day sides.
Based solely on the temperament of their captains, backing the Super Kings or the Knight Riders to win the Fair Play Award in 2021 seems like a good idea.
By contrast, David Warner (SRH) is renowned for being an aggressive player. The Hyderabad captain was even banned for 12 months following the infamous 2018 ball-tampering scandal, meaning he is no stranger to breaking the laws of cricket.
Similarly, 23-year-old Rishabh Pant (DC) is the youngest IPL captain by some distance this year. His inexperience at this level could cost Delhi.
When you consider those statistics, it makes sense to steer clear of the Sunrisers and the Capitals when it comes to betting on the IPL Fair Play Award in 2021.
Study the Squads and Likely Playing XIs
Some players are more likely to get into trouble than others, it’s as simple as that. On the flip side, certain guys are known for showing good sportsmanship and are far less likely to affect their team’s Fair Play ranking.
That’s why I recommend studying the squads and assessing the players for every Indian Premier League team this year.
There have been plenty of memorable IPL moments of the years. In 2018, it looked as though Ben Stokes had caught Alex Hales, only for the RR star to immediately admit that he dropped the ball.
In 2017, Rishbah Pant fell agonizingly short of a century and was visibly distraught. Suresh Raina – who was on the opposing side – showed great sportsmanship by consoling Pant.
If you can familiarize yourself with the teams and the players, you will ultimately stand a better chance of predicting the Fair Play Award winner.
Thankfully for you, I have already ranked every IPL squad for the 2021 season.
