Following a roller-coaster campaign, we have finally reached the last eight of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League! Atalanta and PSG kick off the quarter-finals at Estadio da Luz on Wednesday, and it’s set to be a thrilling game between two attack-minded teams.
Atalanta couldn’t have dreamed of a better debut Champions League campaign, but the Italian side won’t want their fairytale run to come to an end just yet. On the other hand, PSG has become a UCL regular in recent years, although the club is aiming to reach their first semi-final since 1995.
In this post, I discuss the odds before providing my Atalanta vs. PSG prediction and betting pick.
Atalanta vs. PSG Betting Odds
Atalanta to Win3.10
PSG to Win2.10
Of course, Thomas Tuchel’s star-studded team is the bookies’ favorite to advance to the semi-finals. But the high price for the PSG win underlines just how much of a threat Atalanta is. The Italians have shown that they’re capable of blowing away the best sides in Europe, so odds of 3.10 for the Atalanta win are very attractive.
Can Atalanta maintain their remarkable run? Or is it PSG’s year? I assess both teams’ chances below.
Atalanta vs. PSG Preview
When Atalanta lost their first three group games, it looked as though their debut Champions League campaign was going to end in disappointment. But after holding EPL-giant Manchester City to a draw on Matchday 4, the Bergamo outfit beat Dinamo Zagreb and Shakhtar Donetsk to snatch second place in Group C against all odds. But the shocks didn’t stop there. An 8-4 aggregate victory over Valencia in the Round of 16 saw the underdog book their place in the last eight in style.
Atalanta recently secured a second consecutive third-place finish in Serie A, ending up just five points shy of champion Juventus. Gian Piero Gasperini’s men netted an astonishing 98 goals in 38 league games in 2019/20, finishing as the top scorers in Italy’s top tier by some distance. Gasperini’s gung-ho approach does leave the team exposed at the back, but you can’t really argue with the manager’s methods.
While Atalanta is somewhat of an unknown quantity on the European stage, PSG is competing in its eighth successive Champions League campaign. However, it’s fair to say that the French powerhouse has massively underachieved in recent season. The Parisians have been knocked out in the Round of 16 in the last three years, so this is their first quarter-final since 2016.
Needless to say, PSG completely dominated Ligue 1 last term, clinching its seventh top-flight title in eight years. But the team has enjoyed very little competitive action since the French season was curtailed back in February. And to make matters worse, star forward Kylian Mbappe is likely to miss Wednesday’s clash after picking up an ankle injury in PSG’s Coupe de France final win over Saint-Etienne last month.
Atalanta vs. PSG Prediction and Pick
Atalanta to Win
If you haven’t been following Atalanta’s rise, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this matchup has somewhat of a “David and Goliath” feel to it. But I think the one-off nature of this tie favors the Italian side. Gasperini’s men are capable of outscoring any team, so I’m backing Atalanta to heap more European misery on PSG.
