Aston Villa vs. Wolves Betting Preview – EPL, June 27

The English Premier League dishes up a tasty local derby on Saturday as Aston Villa welcomes West Midlands rival Wolverhampton Wanderers to Villa Park.

Villa’s relegation fears are still very real after failing to win any of their three games since the restart, while Wolves’ situation looks a lot brighter. Back-to-back victories have seen the Wanderers move level with fifth-place Manchester United and within touching distance of the Champions League spots.

It is hardly surprising that Betway views Wolves as the clear favorite to win this clash. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side has enjoyed an excellent 2019/20 campaign so far, cementing their status as one of the division’s best teams.

By contrast, Villa is in danger of dropping out of England’s top division altogether. Dean Smith’s men have struggled to adapt to the demands of the Premier League this term, so odds of 4.75 for the home win are fair.

Villa can probably count themselves fortunate to still be in with a chance of avoiding the drop. Draws with Sheffield United and Newcastle, along with a defeat to Chelsea, have seen the relegation battler take just two points from a possible nine since the restart. But with Bournemouth and West Ham both losing their previous two games, second-bottom Villa remains locked on 27 points with the two teams directly above them in the table.

Ahmed Elmohamady’s late equalizer last time out could prove to be hugely important come the end of the season. The Villains were dominated for large spells against Newcastle but eventually managed to come away with a vital point. However, it goes without saying that Wolves won’t be half as forgiving as the Magpies.

Interestingly, the Wanderers have inadvertently helped Villa of late. Not only have Wolves’ recent victories over West Ham and Bournemouth enhanced the club’s UCL ambitions, but they have also prevented Villa from falling further into the relegation zone. Still, I can’t see Wolves further aiding Villa’s stuttering survival bid on Saturday.

Nuno’s side may have only claimed two narrow wins since the lay-off, but their recent scorelines don’t tell the whole story. Wolves completely controlled their previous two games, while lethal forwards Adama Traore and Raul Jimenez have already combined for two goals since the resumption.

Considering the evident gulf in quality between Villa and Wolves, the price for the away win looks good here. Of course, the home side is desperate for points right now. But Wolves also have important business take care of.

Villa has the worst defensive record in the Premier League this season, so Wolves’ talented forwards will be licking their lips at the prospect of facing the Villains’ leaky backline.
