Assessing the Utah Jazz Head Coach and His Assistants for the Upcoming NBA Season (2020-21)

Utah Jazz Coaching Staff Analysis for the 2020-21 NBA Season

Many believe that the Utah Jazz has a competitive roster for the upcoming 2020-21 and expect big things from the team. Quin Snyder and his assistants will have the ultimate responsibility to extract the best out of the players and lead them to success.

In this post, I explore the Jazz coaching staff and the roles of every person who’s part of it. You can learn more about the people who are responsible for the chemistry and condition of the players.

What You Need to Know about Quin Snyder

It’s only natural that we start with the head coach of the Utah Jazz. Quin Snyder’s coaching career began way back in the 1992-93 season when he was an assistant for the Los Angeles Clippers.

He moved to Duke and spent six years working as an assistant of the legendary coach K, before leading Missouri in his first stint as a head coach. He caught the Spurs’ eye and received the chance to become the head coach of the D-League Austin Toros in 2007.

That opened the door to the NBA, and Snyder joined the 76ers as an assistant coach. He had stints with the Lakers, the Hawks, and even the Russian CSKA Moscow before being appointed as the Utah Jazz head coach in 2014.

The team narrowly missed the NBA Playoffs in his first two seasons but has managed to qualify for the postseason in the next four in a row. Snyder’s vast experience on different levels has helped him build a solid team with no clear weaknesses.

The Jazz can defend well, and they also finished the previous campaign with the 8th best offensive rating in the NBA. The main critique for Snyder last year was that he didn’t manage to extract the best of Mike Conley, but that’s unfair given the guard’s injuries.

The Jazz head coach has vowed to become even more flexible next year after learning from the NBA Bubble experience and the fans will be hoping that he keeps his promise.

Naturally, he will need some help from his assistance, so let’s take a look at them next.

Utah Jazz Assistant Coaches

Quin Snyder works with seven assistants after adding Keyon Dooling and Dell Demps to his staff in 2020.

Before we move on to their roles, I must mention that Snyder has repeatedly said that he doesn’t have such a strict distribution of the duties across his staff. In his own words, he prefers that his assistants can do a little bit of everything.

Alex Jensen

Former player Alex Jensen is the only member of the Jazz staff that has been with the organization before Quin Snyder. He is an expert in developing young players, and many believe that Jensen deserves a lot of credit for helping Donovan Mitchell become a star so early in his career.

Mike Wells

Next in line is Mike Wells, who joined the Utah Jazz in 2014 and knows the organization very well. The assistant is involved in pretty much every aspect, from day-to-day coaching to long-term planning.

Lamar Skeeter

Lamar Skeeter was the Utah Jazz coach for the summer league in 2019, and his main role is related to player development and video coordination.

Vince Legarza

Quin Snyder worked with Vince Legarza during his time with the Atlanta Hawks, and he obviously liked him enough to attract him to the Jazz in 2018. He is another flexible guy that contributes to various areas, including daily training and player development.

Sergi Oliva

The former Philadelphia 76ers Vice President of Strategy Sergi Oliva was acquired by the Jazz in 2020. The Catalonian is an expert in long-term planning thanks to his vast experience in both Europe and the NBA.

Dell Demps

Another addition from the 2020 offseason that deserves some attention is Dell Demps. He acquired experience as a player both in the NBA and overseas before returning to the USA when he worked in various coaching and front-office positions.

Keyon Dooling

The addition of former player Keyon Dooling is interesting to me because of his expertise in mental health. The former NBA PA’s wellness counselor and mental health advocate is a certified life coach, and I expect him to take care of the players’ psychological condition.

Final Words

I hope that you found my analysis of the Utah Jazz coaching staff interesting. The organization certainly relies on a colorful group of experts with exciting backgrounds to drive the team forward. I’m curious to see how the three new additions from 2020 could after the upcoming season.
