4 Sleepers to Bet on at the 2021 Golden Globes

2021 Golden Globes Sleepers

In less than a month, the first major entertainment industry award show will arrive in 2021. The Oscars come after, and even the Grammys got pushed back into March.

All things considered, fans of entertainment could use the mental break, and anyone who frequents the best entertainment betting sites wouldn’t mind a shot at winning some cash, either.

You can do that by betting on the Golden Globes, just like in year’s past. Typically a somewhat predictable event, logic tends to favor backing the heavy favorites.

But as is the case with any award show, surprises do happen. Golden Globes sleepers can go from mere betting fodder to genius wagers.

Which 2021 Golden Globes sleepers are especially worth betting on? Let’s take a look at some of the best value bets going into the 2021 Golden Globe Awards, including Regina King and more.

Regina King to Win Best Director (+550)

Chloe Zhao is rightfully praised for her work on Nomadland, and she’s currently the top favorite at MyBookie. But another woman deserves the spotlight, perhaps even more so.

I don’t just mention Regina King in my title or intro for fun. I’m propping her up because she deserves it.

You might know her best for his thrilling work as Sister Night in Watchmen.

Of course, she’s been all over the place.

King has left a lasting mark in Ray, If Beale Street Could Talk, and The Leftovers, and so many other underrated projects.

The hope here is two-fold; that King’s direction of a towering ensemble in One Night in Miami doesn’t go unnoticed, and that it can win bettors a nice chunk of cash.

Oh, and it might be about time that a woman of color wins one of these things.

Female directors in general have long failed to get the respect they deserve, while this year could be the first time a woman of color even gets nominated for Best Director at the Oscars.

This isn’t the Oscars, but King or Zhao feel like the most compelling bets here. Zhao is the understandable favorite, but my vote resides with King.

Not only are King’s +550 odds a bit more appealing to anyone betting on the 2021 Golden Globes, but her work in One Night in Miami is impeccable.

The storytelling is nuanced, while the direction is perfect for a tale involving such powerhouse icons such as Jim Brown, Muhammad Ali, and Malcolm X.

King’s nod is deserving here. One could argue she deserves the flat out win, however.

One Night in Miami to Win Best Film (+800)

That brings me to my favorite 2021 Golden Globe Awards sleeper for Best Drama Film. That’s none other than One Night in Miami.

For one, it’s a terrific story about real-life legends coming together for one pivotal moment in history.

It doesn’t just broach uncomfortable topics or hand out a history lesson, it also gives us an inside look at four iconic figures in one isolated setting.

If Regina King can’t get the nod for Best Director (and even if she does), and the acting talent doesn’t get the recognition for pure perfection, then the whole package should at least threaten for Best Drama Film.

Anytime you’re talking about the best movie of the year, you need to be hitting home runs across the board. The storytelling, content, direction, and acting is all impossibly top notch, with very few flaws – if any.

To be frank, it’s a bit shocking you can still get One Night in Miami at this sweet of a price.

Steven Yeun to Win Best Actor (+1400)

Chadwick Boseman is the top threat to win Best Actor at this year’s Golden Globes, and he’d be doing so posthumously.

Some will suggest he isn’t necessarily deserving, but this would be more of a tip of the cap to a fantastic actor that left this world far too soon.

Maybe it’d just be a little bit of both.

Boseman was his usual fantastic self in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, and nobody can really argue about his talent or his work in that film. At +150, he’s a rock solid favorite, and the price is pretty nice.

I think this is his award to lose, but if you really look at this field, it’s not like it’s wanting for value. Massive names like Anthony Hopkins, Gary Oldman, and Tom Hanks are up for this award, while Riz Ahmed is a viable sleeper (+600) for his riveting work in Sound of Metal.

But the one performance that stands out as the ultimate sleeper bet is Yeun’s in the unheralded Minari.

Yeun is best known for his many near run-ins with death (and his eventual exit) on the popular The Walking Dead, and this vehicle is arguably his first real chance to showcase his insanely versatile talent as an actor.

The Golden Globes shouldn’t hold that against him, though.

Yeun takes a golden opportunity (no pun intended) and runs with it in Minari. He helps tell an important story of family, love, perseverance, and resilience.

Minari is destined to be overshadowed by bigger, badder, and louder films this year. So, too, may Yeun. But he probably shouldn’t be, and his +1600 odds at the 2021 Golden Globes are to die for.

Amy Adams to Win Best Actress (+1600)

I’ll wrap up my 2021 Golden Globes sleepers with the Best Actress category. As noted, Nomadland is a projected big winner this year, and Frances McDormand (+195 favorite) is a huge reason why.

She’s as flawless as ever, and it’s likely she claims this award, perhaps both at the Golden Globes, and the Oscars.

If not, Viola Davis and maybe even Carey Mulligan are her biggest threats.

But one actress that doesn’t seem to be getting the respect she deserves is Adams.

A major player in this category – seemingly on a yearly basis – there’s no doubt Adams is revered for her talent and difficulty of roles.

Even so, Adams “only” has two wins despite earning eight previous Golden Globes nominations. That’s a better percentage than most, but it’s pretty arguable she’s seen many a valiant effort get lost in the shuffle.

There’s a very real danger of that happening again at the 2021 Golden Globe Awards, but at +1600, bettors need to consider the upset.

After all, it’s not like there haven’t been big Golden Globes upsets before.

Adams is a real player here. She’ll be coming out of nowhere thanks to a dirty, gritty role in Hillbilly Elegy, where she plays a lost and tortured mother trying desperately to get out of her own way.

The movie itself misses the mark, and is probably the main reason Adams’ brilliance is being overlooked. But when you consider the work done here and her amazing talent, +1600 feels too good to completely pass up.

Bet on These Golden Globes Sleepers

When looking to bet on the 2021 Golden Globes, your number one priority should be getting winners. After that, you’re shopping for the best odds, and trying to lock down the best values.

Ideally, you get the perfect mixture, enjoy a fun show, and end the night with some nice profit.

Nailing the right 2021 Golden Globes sleepers can be part of that process.

Are all of my favorite 2021 Golden Globe Awards sleepers locks to deliver? No, but they are all either big names, and/or extremely deserving of winning.

Oh, and they all offer serious upside for bettors.

Regina King and One Night in Miami don’t have to be sold as a package deal. There is no guarantee that both win at the Golden Globes. But one winning wouldn’t shock me in the least.

I also don’t think betting on both Yeun and Adams is an appropriate use of “aiming for the fences”, but one of them may have a shot at an unbeatable price.

You don’t need to bet on all four of these 2021 Golden Globes sleepers – nor all value plays in general. Just adding one great sleeper to your rolodex of Golden Globes bets can be all it takes to turn a good night of betting into an amazing one.

Of course, you also want to consider all of the favorites, as well as how and where to bet on the Golden Globes. For a total overview, check out my 2021 Golden Globes betting guide below.
