The SEC Conference is a powerhouse in college football. Alabama is always a National Championship contender, but we often see one of Georgia, Florida, LSU, or Auburn challenge for the top spot.
Georgia won the 2022 National Championship, but Alabama claimed the SEC Championship. How will that impact the 2022 SEC Conference Championship odds? Both teams are among the 2023 National Championship contenders.

2022 SEC Championship Odds
Everyone knew Alabama and Georgia would open as the favorites for the 2022 SEC odds. Despite losing the National Championship to Georgia, the 2022 SEC title odds give Alabama the nod.
There’ll be plenty of time to talk about both teams, so let’s spotlight everyone else. Texas A&M is in their own tier at (+850), while Kentucky and Florida have a slight advantage over everyone else.
Can someone emerge from the (+4000) group? LSU and Auburn have a strong pedigree, but they haven’t been as competitive lately. LSU hopes new head coach Brian Kelly can return them to the promised land.
Why Is Alabama the SEC Championship Favorite?
We have one or two teams take their shot at Alabama every year. They’re good enough to hang with them, but Alabama always wins out. They’ll enter the 2022 season with much motivation after losing the National Championship.
The 2022 SEC Conference odds have Alabama in a position to repeat because of their talent on both sides of the ball. They keep losing players to the NFL, but they constantly replenish their roster.
Bryce Young will have much hype as he aims for another Heisman Trophy, but I believe the best player in college football resides on Alabama’s defense.
Will Anderson has Texas A&M circled on the calendar 👀🍿 pic.twitter.com/orbvliS0Q0— PFF College (@PFF_College) July 25, 2022
Will Anderson Jr. was a monster last season, recording 101 tackles, 31.0 tackles for loss, and 17.5 sacks. I have him as one of the top 2022 Heisman Trophy sleepers. He’s good enough to overcome the odds.
Alabama has so much talent on defense, even without Anderson. Henry To’oTo’o, Jordan Battle, and LSU transfer Eli Ricks made the preseason first-team All-SEC. I expect a much-improved Alabama defense in 2022.
That’ll put pressure on opposing teams to stop their offense. Young should have another big season, but I want to spotlight running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Check out his numbers last season at Georgia Tech.
- 746 Rushing Yards
- 465 Receiving Yards
- 6 Touchdowns
Many people believe he’ll emerge as one of the top running backs in college football. That’s big for Alabama’s offense because they have question marks at wide receiver.
Honestly, Alabama doesn’t have a tough schedule. An early road matchup against Texas should be intriguing, but they may not play another top 25 team on the road. It’s not like they need an easy schedule to win the SEC.
The 2022 SEC College Football odds have high hopes for Alabama. They shouldn’t have a problem living up to the hype.
Who Can Challenge Alabama in the SEC Conference?
The 2022 SEC Conference odds tell us that only two teams are within striking distance of Alabama. Let’s discuss the 2022 season outlook for Georgia and Texas A&M.
It’s interesting to look at Georgia’s 2021 season because they won the National Championship. However, this betting preview revolves around the SEC. Alabama had their way in a dominant 41-21 victory.
Is there extra motivation for Georgia to capture the SEC, or will they have a championship hangover? The 2022 SEC odds believe in the former, as they’re right with Alabama for the 2022 title.
Everyone wants to know how Georgia will perform on defense. Their defense was on another level in 2021, allowing less than 10 points per game. They watched many of their top players leave for the NFL.

How will Georgia overcome the loss? Thankfully, they have a few standout players returning for the 2022 season. Jalen Carter will lead the defensive line after recording 37 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, and 3.0 sacks.
Nolan Smith takes over as the top linebacker, while Keelee Ringo leads the secondary. Ringo had the pick-six to seal the National Championship win.
Can Georgia’s offense improve enough to offset their defensive losses? Truthfully, they weren’t that bad in 2021. Take a look at their numbers.
- 38.6 Points Per Game (3rd)
- 442.8 Yards Per Game (5th)
That represents their ranking among SEC teams. Their 38.6 points per game ranked top 10 in college football. Replicating that would go a long way towards another SEC Championship Game appearance.
And Georgia has quality players on offense. Brock Bowers and Kenny McIntosh made the All-SEC preseason team. There’s a good chance Georgia enters the season with the best offensive line in college football.
Georgia kicks off the season with a neutral site game against Oregon. A late-season road matchup with Kentucky could be the difference in competing in the SEC Championship Game. Can they get the job done?
Texas A&M (+900)
It’s interesting to look at Texas A&M among the biggest challengers to Alabama. They finished fourth in the AP Poll in 2020, but that’s their only top 15 finish in the last nine years. Are they ready to make a run at their first SEC Championship?
Texas A&M looked strong at times last season, including knocking off No. 1 Alabama. Even so, an 8-4 record isn’t enough in the SEC.
The 2022 SEC title odds have Texas A&M in contention, but they aren’t on the same level as Georgia or Alabama. They have a solid chance to close the gap after landing the No. 1 recruiting class.
- Walter Nolan, DT
- Gabe Brownlow-Dindy, DT
- Shemar Stewart, DE
- Evan Stewart, WR
Those are the five-star players joining Texas A&M for the 2022 season. They have many more four-star players that will help them win the SEC. My 2022 college football win totals have them clearing nine wins because of the recruiting class.
Georgia received much attention for their stellar defense last season, but don’t sleep on Texas A&M. They allowed the third-fewest points per game at 15.9.
It won’t be easy without DeMarvin Leal and Tyree Johnson, but a strong recruiting class and new defensive coordinator DJ Durkin have them in position for another big year.
Jimbo Fisher spoke highly of new Texas A&M defensive coordinator DJ Durkin while at SEC Media Days, saying he had a positive impact this spring…— Marshall Levenson (@MarshallLevyOn3) July 24, 2022
Read here on why Fisher believes Durkin will be a big piece of the Aggies upcoming season!
It’ll be interesting to see who starts at quarterback for Texas A&M. Haynes King returns for his third season, but he’ll have competition from LSU transfer Max Johnson and four-star recruit Conner Weigman.
Texas A&M must take care of business if they want to compete for the SEC Championship. They have three straight road games in September/October, including a matchup against Alabama.
Their odds of winning the 2022 SEC Conference Championship will improve if they make it through that stretch without a loss.
Best Value Picks to Win the SEC Title in 2022
I imagine most people will pick Alabama or Georgia to win the SEC. The 2022 SEC Conference Championship odds give everyone else value, so why not check out a few sleepers?
This isn’t college basketball. Why are we talking about Kentucky in football? Kentucky has long been an afterthought in college football, but Mark Stoops has turned them into a legit contender.
Kentucky is coming off their second 10-win season in the last four years. That’s the type of record you need to compete with Alabama and Georgia. The best football betting websites have them as the top sleeper.
What’s so appealing about Kentucky? Well, they may have the best QB-RB duo in the SEC. Okay, that may be a stretch with Bryce Young and Jahmyr Gibbs, but Kentucky is no joke.
Only QB/RB duo in the SEC to have 85+ rushing grades last season:— PFF College (@PFF_College) June 29, 2022
🔹 Will Levis: 86.3
🔹 Chris Rodriguez Jr: 86.6 pic.twitter.com/O2Yt967jXA
Chris Rodriguez Jr. has steadily improved as he approaches his final season at Kentucky. Last season, he rushed for 1,378 yards and 10 touchdowns. He made the preseason All-SEC second-team.
Quarterback Will Levis could enter the Heisman discussion with a strong season. He completed 66.0 percent of his passes on his way to 2,826 passing yards and 24 touchdowns. He’ll need to cut down on his 13 interceptions.
Kentucky’s offense is the driving force behind their SEC College Football Conference odds. Levis and Rodriguez lead the way, but it’ll be tough to replicate a strong 2021 season without Wan’Dale Robinson.
- 104 Receptions
- 1,334 Yards
- 7 Touchdowns
Robinson has moved on to the NFL. Will Levis be the same quarterback without his top wide receiver? That’s why we don’t see Kentucky’s odds closer to Texas A&M.
Kentucky has a pair of tough road matchups against Florida and Tennessee. If they win both, a home game against Georgia on November 19 could decide the SEC East Division. I believe they can give Georgia a run for their money.
Do you believe in a strong season from Kentucky?
It’s fair to say most people have Georgia winning the SEC East Division. We should see a strong fight for second, with Kentucky and Tennessee being the top contenders.
Tennessee showed improvement last season, but a 7-6 record wasn’t enough to finish top 25 in the AP Poll. You have to go back to 2007 to find their last top 15 finish. Is there any hope that the streak will end in 2022?
Their 2022 SEC Championship odds revolve around Hendon Hooker and Tennessee’s offense. Hooker was impressive last season, passing for 2,945 yards, 31 touchdowns, and three interceptions.
Our QB. Hendon Hooker.— CHANNEL (@CHANNEL_TN_) May 5, 2022
Hooker and wide receiver Cedric Tillman made the preseason All-SEC second team. Tillman closed the 2021 season with five 100+ yard performances in six games. He and Hooker will be tough to stop in 2022.
Tennessee shouldn’t have an issue on offense. Hooker, Tillman, and USC transfer Bru McCoy should put them in a good position. After all, Tennessee ranked seventh in college football with 39.3 points per game.
If the odds to win the SEC College Football title revolved around offense, Tennessee would be a top contender. Unfortunately, their defense handicaps their SEC hopes. Check out their 2021 numbers.
- 27.5 Points Per Game (12th)
- 404.6 Yards Per Game (11th)
- 251.4 Passing Yards Per Game (13th)
- 153.2 Rushing Yards Per Game (8th)
They were among the worst defenses in the SEC. Their numbers look even worse in SEC play. Thankfully, they have quality players in Byron Young and Tyler Baron. They won’t be on Georgia’s level, but I expect improvement.
Unfortunately, Tennessee’s schedule gives them an uphill battle. They face Alabama, Georgia, Florida, and Kentucky.
If they somehow knock off Alabama and Kentucky at home, a road matchup with Georgia should decide the SEC East Division.
Who Will Win the SEC Championship in 2022?
Last season, the SEC was a battle between Alabama and Georgia. The 2022 SEC Conference Championship odds believe we’ll see the same.
I like Alabama’s chances to win the 2022 SEC Championship. They have many talents on both sides of the ball while sporting two of the best players in college football.
