The Rugby Championship 2022 kicks off this Saturday, August 6, with South Africa vs. New Zealand in Mbombela.

This year’s tournament is a bit of a strange one. The question is, has the Southern Hemisphere lost its stranglehold on world rugby? Based on the 2022 Rugby Championship odds alone, nothing looks out of place. The All Blacks and South Africa are expected to produce the winner, with New Zealand as slight favorites with the top rugby betting sites.

Last month, Ireland did what no other nation has ever done in the history of the sport. They won a three-series test on the sacred lands of Aotearoa. The Green Machine headed back to Europe with a 2-1 win, leaving Kiwis scratching their heads in disbelief.

Wales managed to get a win in South Africa, albeit against a weakened Springboks side. The reigning Rugby World Cup champions limped past the Welsh in their three-game series, with their odds of winning the 2022 Rugby Championship not too far off their historic rivals.

Of course, Argentina and Australia will be looking to snag a couple of victories. Only a fool would write these two off, especially with some encouraging summer displays against the Scots and the English, respectively.

Who will win the 2022 Rugby Championship? If you feel confident you can answer that question with a bet, it could make you some money.

Before I break down the favorites and get to my 2022 Rugby Championship prediction, let’s see the odds.

Latest 2022 Rugby Championship Odds

New Zealand-110
South Africa+150
Australia+500
Argentina+4000

I’ve taken the 2022 Rugby Championship odds from the Betway sportsbook.

As mentioned above, New Zealand comes in as the frontrunner for the title. Despite being in disarray, a bet on the defending champions will get you odds of -110. This means a bet of $100 will return $90 in profit should the 2022 Rugby Championship favorite lift the trophy.

South Africa looks decent value at +150. A $100 wager will return a nice profit of $150, in addition to your $100 stake. The world champions are also looking to prove a point and can get off to a flying start on home soil on August 6.

The 2022 Rugby Championship betting odds take a bit of a drop after these two, with Australia priced up at +500. Argentina is the longshot option at +4000. But those odds are wide for a reason.

Assessing New Zealand’s Status as the Favorite

New Zealand Logo

While this is a 2022 Rugby Championship betting preview, you can’t ignore the absolute scenes following the summer tests.

Ireland slotted into 1st place in the official World Rugby Rankings following a historic series win in NZ. The home side slipped to 4th, which is their lowest ranking of all time. Panic stations? Ha. That wouldn’t be like All Blacks fans at all, would it? I’m sure the Kiwi media haven’t lost their cool …

Of course, they have. Many in the great rugby nation practically raised the flags to half-mast following their defeat to the Irish.

This is what happens when your team is the one that tends to hand out the beatings. Consistently. You would also have to think that there is more than a hint of chaos permeating the camp.

You must wonder how much of this will bleed into the All Blacks dressing room before the opening match of The Rugby Championship 2022. With Ian Foster about as popular as a lit match to sunburnt skin right now, a nation expects to see a dramatic upswing in fortunes.

Although this may be the case, New Zealand is still the team to beat. At least, according to the bookies. Perhaps the oddsmakers are giving Ireland more credit than the Kiwis are? Or could it be that Southern Hemisphere rugby is on the decline, but the All Blacks are still the best of the bunch?

Rugby Championship 2022 Predictions for New Zealand

Who will win the 2022 Rugby Championship?

Sorry, All Blacks fans. But I don’t see it being New Zealand. The media backlash has been deafening, with Foster losing John Plumtree and Brad Mooar as sacrificial lambs to the slaughter.

Foster knows he could go down as one of the most castigated men in his country’s history this month should his team lose their next two matches.

If the once unthinkable happens, it would mean that the All Blacks have one win and six losses from their last seven matches. Wow, indeed. The scary thing for fans is that the Kiwi pack does not seem to have what it takes to compete with the Springboks upfront. And the creative output from their backs has been nothing short of mediocre.

No head coach of the All Blacks has ever been sacked. Yet. Imagine Foster goes during a season. That would be insane to fathom, even a year ago.

Joe Schmidt likes this.

Will South Africa Win the Rugby Championship in 2022?

South Africa Logo

Given that Australia and Argentina are not up to it, what’s the point in holding back my 2022 Rugby Championship prediction?

South Africa will be champions. I’m not saying it will be easy, as this tournament never is, but I can’t see the Boks letting an opportunity like this slide. They start with two games against New Zealand at home. A first since the 2009 Tri-Nations, which saw a hat trick of wins over the All Blacks.

The 2022 Rugby Championship betting odds make South Africa a nice pick at +150.

There is positive betting value to be had backing against New Zealand. While it won’t be easy, the Springboks appear to be in a much better place than their rivals.

Back-to-back home matches against the Kiwis make that an even sweeter price. Get off to a good start in Round 1, and it’s there for the taking. New Zealand always starts slow, and it’s unlikely that the side will come out all guns blazing following a very physically and mentally tough series against Ireland.

Bokkie Power Will Make the Difference

South Africa welcomes back Faf de Klerk and Malcolm Marx in starting spots ahead of the opener.

While Cheslin Kolbe is out, Kurt-Lee Arendse should put in a shift. However, the uncompromising and ferocious pack should win this game for the home team and set a marker for the rest of the tournament.

Furthermore, Handre Pollard should be an integral man in the hole when converting points. The number 10 will hope to help Leicester win the 2022 Heineken Champions Cup. But securing the title in the green and gold is first on the agenda.

Ireland outmuscled the Kiwis in the second and third tests, using a super-effective rolling maul in the process. It’s not beyond reason to suggest that the Boks will have their way with a mediocre front row and a lineout that has looked anything but impressive.

Win this match, and the Boks win the series.

Top Bets for the 2022 Rugby Championship

  • Winner: South Africa +150
  • Top Try Scorer: Will Jordan (+900)
  • Top Points Scorer: Handre Pollard (+180)

Take South Africa’s odds to win the 2022 Rugby Championship.

Again, I’m not suggesting that it will be a walkover. The Boks were far from impressive against a poor Welsh side, scraping the series 2-1. Unlike New Zealand, however, it didn’t appear they needed to get out of first gear in that series. This is the tournament they have been waiting for, and the prospect of facing a Kiwi team down on its luck should be music to the ears of everyone in the Republic.

I’ve also added two prop bets for The Rugby Championship 2022. Although I’m tipping New Zealand to finish behind the Boks, the menacing Will Jordan is a good bet for the tournament’s top try scorer.

South Africa’s Pollard is an even better option for betting on The Rugby Championship’s top points scorer. Last year’s leader should have ample attempts to repeat that feat.

Of course, that is my opinion. If you think differently, feel free to get your bets down on many scenarios that could play out. Although I’d be surprised if we don’t see the table start with South Africa and end with Argentina.

More Wagering Advice for the 2022 Rugby Championship

South Africa and New Zealand

My 2022 Rugby Championship pick is South Africa. As you already know.

If you are betting early on the championship, that’s about as good of a wager as you can get. Don’t expect South Africa’s 2022 Rugby Championship odds to improve with a win over New Zealand. One of the first rules of online sports betting is to jump on value when you see it. This is the value bet of the tournament.

If you want to add more spice to your bets, you can do that. But don’t go too far off the map.

My 2022 Rugby Championship winner prediction aside, get on Jordan and Pollard per my top picks above.

Now, I’m conscious of not having much to say about Australia or Argentina in this betting preview. While I can’t wait to see both sides get to it, the unfortunate truth is that, from a betting perspective, I don’t see any point in gambling on either to win the tourney.

The Wallabies will finish 3rd, with the Pumas behind them in last place.

Remember, you can also bet on individual matches. That includes Australia and Argentina. The sites at the top of this page will have odds for The Rugby Championship games from Round 1 to Round 6. You’ll also find some other props to get on.

This should be South Africa’s year on the domestic front. But how will they fare at the club level? Find out in my 2022 United Rugby Championship betting preview below.
