Kevin O'Connell and John Harbaugh

The NFL Coach of the Year award honors the best coach in the NFL. A lot goes into it, as the top contenders need to have their team in playoff contention. It also helps to outweigh expectations.

One great thing about this award compared to MVP and others is the value. The 2022 NFL Coach of the Year odds have the favorite at +1200. It’s not tough to find an appealing bet for this award.

Not sure who to back, though? Check out the NFL Coach of the Year betting odds for 2022, along with my ultimate prediction.

2022 NFL Coach of the Year Award Odds

Kevin O’Connell+1200
Brandon Stanley+1400
Brian Daboll+1500
Nathaniel Hackett+1600
Mike McDaniel+1600
Josh McDaniels+1800
Kyle Shanahan+1800
Dan Campbell+1800
Zac Taylor+2000
Sean McDermott+2000

My initial reaction is the inexperience among top contenders for NFL COY. Kyle Shanahan is the only coach among the top eight contenders who has been with his team for more than two years. Four of the top five are first-time head coaches.

The 2022 NFL COY odds don’t discriminate with experience. The last five years have seen three first-time head coaches win the award.

There is a large group at (+2000), with many experienced head coaches. Check out the top US betting sites to pick who will win the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year award.

Why Is Kevin O’Connell the NFL COY Favorite?

Kevin O’Connell becomes the latest first-year head coach under the age of 40. O’Connell takes over as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings after spending two seasons as the Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator.

Everyone knows how successful the Rams’ offense has been. Sean McVay deserves much of the credit, but O’Connell played a crucial role. Will that carry over to the Vikings?

Minnesota has been a solid team for the last five to eight years, but they can’t take the next step. O’Connell’s offensive expertise should unlock their potential.

The Vikings offense features Kirk Cousins, Dalvin Cook, Justin Jefferson, and Adam Thielen. Cook and Jefferson have a strong argument for being a top-five players at their position. Cousins’ numbers suggest he’s a top-12 quarterback, and Thielen is a touchdown machine.

We should see Minnesota become a pass-first team in 2022. I believe that’ll allow their offense to reach its full potential. Overall, that should make them a top contender in the NFC.

There’s a good chance the Green Bay Packers will take a step back without Davante Adams. A 10 or 11-win season and NFC North title would make O’Connell the favorite for NFL Coach of the Year in 2022.

Top NFL Coach of the Year Candidates

The NFL Coach of the Year betting odds have everyone in a tight group. It’ll be a while before one or two coaches separate themselves. Until then, we examine the top candidates to win the 2022 NFL COY.

Josh McDaniels (+1800)

Josh McDaniels takes over as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, but this isn’t his first time being a head coach. McDaniels spent two years as head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2009 and 2010.

McDaniels should be in a much better position after spending 10+ years on Bill Belichick’s coaching staff. He’ll inherit a Raiders team coming off a playoff appearance.

The AFC West is tough in 2022, with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers making significant upgrades. However, we can’t forget the Raiders added Davante Adams. Check out his 2021 numbers.

Davante Adams
  • 123 Receptions
  • 1,553 Yards
  • 11 Touchdowns

Derek Carr now has Adams, Darren Waller, and Hunter Renfrow. It’s not out of the question to say the Raiders can have a top-five offense. They’re the team everyone forgets about in the AFC West. Our 2022 NFL season bold predictions have every AFC West team making the playoffs.

We should see an improved Raiders defense after adding Chandler Jones and Rock Ya-Sin. That’ll be big for McDaniels’ 2022 NFL COY odds.

McDaniels should be the Coach of the Year if the Raiders claim the AFC West as an 11 or 12-win team.

Kevin Stefanski (+2000)

We’ve talked about first-time head coaches being top contenders for NFL COY. Kevin Stefanski accomplished that feat by winning Coach of the Year in his first season with the Cleveland Browns. Stefanski enters his third season with the Browns.

Last season was a disappointment for Cleveland as they missed the playoffs. They made a significant upgrade at quarterback, acquiring Deshaun Watson. That should put them in Super Bowl contention, but a potential suspension hurts their chances.

Still, I believe Stefanski can win Coach of the Year. How can he pull it off?

Let’s say Watson misses the first six games in 2022. Cleveland doesn’t have a tough schedule in that span. They play the Los Angeles Chargers, but their second-hardest game is a home matchup against the New England Patriots.

Stefanski has a strong chance to keep Cleveland in contention without Watson. That would boost his 2022 NFL Coach of the Year odds early in the season.

Watson’s return should vault the Browns to one of the top teams in the NFL. It’s not out of the question to say they can finish 12-5. That may be enough to win the AFC. It’d be tough to go against Stefanski if that happens.

Sleepers to Monitor for Coach of the Year

Bettors know how common it is to see a sleeper win the Coach of the Year award. Which under-the-radar coaches have the best chance to claim the award in 2022?

John Harbaugh (+2500)

You won’t find inexperience with John Harbaugh. He has been with the Baltimore Ravens since 2008. Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin are the only active head coaches with a longer tenure.

Harbaugh has had a successful tenure, including winning the 2019 Coach of the Year. He doesn’t have the best odds, but this is the sweet spot for NFL COY. A great season for the Ravens could help him win another NFL COY.

Last season, the Ravens had a multitude of injuries. Somehow, they remained in contention for the playoffs. That had some people considering Harbaugh for Coach of the Year.

The early 2022 AFC Championship odds have Baltimore as a contender because they’ll have many players back from injury. This team isn’t far off the one that finished 14-2 in 2019. That was the same season Harbaugh won NFL COY.

The Cincinnati Bengals have the spotlight in the AFC North, but the Ravens have the best odds. Their roster is capable of challenging the Buffalo Bills for the top spot in the AFC.

Baltimore is the perfect bounce-back candidate, so it’s surprising to see Harbaugh’s odds to win 2022 NFL Coach of the Year at (+2500).

Matt Rhule (+4000)

Matt Rhule is one of the biggest longshots on the board, but Coach of the Year is the perfect award to take a chance. Honestly, Rhule probably has a better chance of leaving the Panthers than winning this award.

The Carolina Panthers attempted to make an upgrade at quarterback last season, but that failed miserably with Sam Darnold. They’ll look to do it again after acquiring Baker Mayfield.

Mayfield took a lot of slack for a rough 2021 season, but he played through a shoulder injury. Two years ago, he had a great season, leading the Browns to the playoffs.

Baker Mayfield
  • 3,563 Passing Yards
  • 26 Touchdowns
  • 8 Interceptions

We’ll see if Mayfield returns to that level, but the Panthers’ offense has pieces. Christian McCaffrey is a top-five running back when healthy. D.J. Moore has three straight 1,100+ yard seasons with below-average quarterback play.

Last season, Carolina allowed the second-fewest yards per game. They have talent on both sides of the ball. A strong start would boost Rhule’s 2022 NFL Coach of the Year award odds.

The Panthers likely won’t overcome the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but a wild-card spot would give Rhule consideration for NFL COY.

Top Betting Tips for 2022 NFL COY

NFL Helmet

Are you having trouble making your 2022 NFL Coach of the Year prediction? My betting tips should give you a better sense of which coaches to target.

Aim for the 10-Win Mark

The Coach of the Year award isn’t necessarily for the coach with the best record. Still, you should be a playoff contender if you want to win the award. Coaches can do so by winning double-digit games.

Maybe 10 wins aren’t enough. In 2009, Marvin Lewis was the last head coach to win the Coach of the Year with ten wins. Check out the NFL COY winners with less than ten wins since 1980.

  • 1982: Joe Gibbs (8-1)
  • 1990: Jimmy Johnson (7-9)

We should put an asterisk with Joe Gibbs because the 1982 season only featured nine games. Gibbs led the Washington Redskins to the best record in football.

It’s interesting to see Brian Daboll and Dan Campbell among the top contenders. They have a chance to exceed expectations, but will an 8-9 record be enough? I’d steer clear of teams that aren’t in playoff contention.

Look for As Much Value As Possible

How often can you find value with the top NFL awards? Last season, the MVP and Offensive/Defensive Rookie of the Year didn’t yield a winner with odds higher than (+2000).

We have odds for the NFL COY for the last seven years. Take a look at the highest odds for the Coach of the Year winner.

  • 2017: Sean McVay (+5000)
  • 2015: Ron Rivera (+4000)
  • 2016: Jason Garrett (+2800)

Matt Nagy in 2018 is the only head coach in that span to win Coach of the Year after opening with odds lower than (+2000). Bettors should check out the top NFL betting apps to find value with the NFL COY.

Sometimes, you have to take a chance on a surprise team. Not many people expected the 2015 Carolina Panthers or 2017 Los Angeles Rams to make a run. I’m taking that approach with Matt Rhule.

Who Will Win NFL Coach of the Year in 2022?

The NFL Coach of the Year is unique from other awards because we don’t typically have a favorite. There are coaches in a good spot, but no one stands out.

I came into this saying I would pick Kevin O’Connell. Unfortunately, he’s the favorite, but I’m sticking with my selection. The Minnesota Vikings should be much-improved in 2022, with eyes on the NFC North title.

The 2022 NFL Coach of the Year odds give you many opportunities to find value. Bettors can check out where to bet on NFL games to determine who will win the 2022 NFL Coach of the Year award.
