Betting Guide for the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine with Analysis and Prediction
Same as always, the Criterium du Dauphine is held in the first half of June in South-East France. The 2022 race begins on Sunday, June 5, when roughly 150 riders embark on an eight-day adventure across the French Alps.
The Criterium du Dauphine 750-mile route travels across steep mountain passes, making it an ideal opportunity for all-rounders to improve their climbing abilities for the Tour de France.
Even though all-rounders love this race, the history of the Criterium du Dauphine teaches us that climbing specialists, a.k.a. grimpeurs, usually end up winning. In fact, most of the previous 73 editions of the race were won by elite climbers.
The same, however, didn’t happen last year when Ineos Grenadiers’ all-rounder Richie Porte won the yellow jersey. Are we going to see the same happening in the 2022 race? If you’d like to learn my opinion, make sure to read my Criterium du Dauphine betting preview until the very end.
Where to Bet on the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine
It’s no secret that European bettors love the Criterium du Dauphine. Run in France; Europeans have dominated the race throughout its 74-year-long history. Non-European cyclists won only ten races in the history of the event.
You can access the top European betting sites if you plan on betting on the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine from Europe. Of course, that doesn’t mean bettors from other parts of the world can’t join in on the fun. Americans, Australians, Canadians – everyone’s welcome at these sites.
Among the things that make these sites great are lucrative bonuses, great cycling betting offer, 24/7 support, etc. These sportsbooks are also among the fastest paying betting sites in the world.
If all this isn’t enough to convince you to sign up to one of the sites from the list, there’s another thing you should know – these sportsbooks always give amazing odds.
I think that it is not just that these sportsbooks are famously very generous; it’s also because the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine will be a very exciting race with some elite cyclists expected to take part – Primož Roglič, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Chris Froome, and many others.
The suggested sportsbooks are going to offer the total package. However, if you’re on the hunt for a good site to bet on the Criterium du Dauphine, prioritize safety, versatility, and upside.
Cyclists Confirmed for the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine
The #1 reason I decided to write this 2022 Criterium du Dauphine betting guide is because this year’s race will be a real spectacle. Even though the entry list is yet to be published, some riders have already confirmed coming to France.
One rider we’re not going to see competing in the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine is defending champion Richie Porte. The Aussie cyclist has decided to skip this event to focus on Giro d’Italia.
Still, even without the reigning champ, the race will be packed with amazing competitors. If everything goes according to plan, we’ll see some real superstars of the cycling universe competing at the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine, with the following 15 being top favorites for the title.
- Primož Roglič
- Tao Geoghegan Hart
- Wout van Aert
- Chris Froome
- Brandon McNulty
- Filippo Ganna
- Dylan Groenewegen
- Ethan Hayter
- Ben O’Connor
- David Gaudu
- Warren Barguil
- Damiano Caruso
- Jack Haig
- Jonas Vingegaard
- Esteban Chaves
These guys will likely be given the shortest prices once bookmakers release their Criterium du Dauphine betting odds. Which of these riders stands a better chance of winning the yellow jersey than the others?
That’s the question I’ll try to answer in the next section of my 2022 Criterium du Dauphine betting preview.
Top Favorites to Win the Criterium du Dauphine 2022
I think Jumbo-Visma’s armada will dominate the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine. The Dutch racing team is bringing heavy artillery to France with Primož Roglič, Wout van Aert, and Jonas Vingegaard in the line-up.
A team that has what it takes to crush Team Jumbo-Visma’s dreams is the Ineos Grenadiers, with climbing specialist Tao Geoghegan Hart as their leader.
Then there’s Israel–Premier Tech, a team led by legendary British cyclist Chris Froome. Although he’s nowhere near his shape from a few years back, Froome needs to be considered a potential Criterium du Dauphine contender.
I’m certain that each of these cyclists will be near the top of the favorites list once the Criterium du Dauphine odds go up. But who deserves the role of the #1 favorite? I’d say Primož Roglič.
The first rider I will focus on in my 2022 Criterium du Dauphine betting guide is Primož Roglič. Generally considered one of the greatest riders in the history of the sport, Roglič spent record 75 weeks at the top of the UCI Rankings. This fact is good enough to make him the main Criterium du Dauphine favorite.
Another reason why I feel positive about Roglič’s chances in this race is because he’s been fantastic since the start of 2022. This year, he’s already won the Paris–Nice race while also finishing in the #8 place in the Tour of the Basque Country.
Roglič needs to be thought of as the #1 favorite to win the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine, even though he doesn’t have great memories from this race. He did come 1st in Stage 2 two years ago but did not qualify for the General classification top 10.
The probable reason why he hasn’t achieved much in this race is that Roglič isn’t a climbing specialist. However, the chances are that he’s looking to improve his climbing prowess to improve his chance of winning the Tour de France in July.
Tao Geoghegan Hart
Here’s a climber who loves these sorts of races. Tao Geoghegan Hart is fantastic when cycling over steep hills and mountains, so I expect him to do great in the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine.
My Criterium du Dauphine prediction is that we will see Geoghegan Hart get on the podium. Whether he’s going to get to the top place remains to be seen. What makes me worry about his chances of winning the race is that he hasn’t been great this year.
In fact, since winning the 2020 Giro d’Italia, Geoghegan Hart hasn’t won any major race. His best achievement in 2022 was the #5 place in the general classification of the Tour of Norway in May. Before that, he competed in three other races, finishing outside the top 10 each time.
On the bright side, Hart’s resurgence might be on the horizon. His team Ineos Grenadiers has faith in this guy, and you can be sure his teammates will do all in their power to help him win the Criterium de Dauphine.
Other 2022 Criterium du Dauphine Contenders
Primož Roglič and Tao Geoghegan Hart are my top favorites to win the 2022 race. I’m pretty confident these two will get the shortest Criterium du Dauphine odds from the bookmakers.
Of course, the allure of the best cycling betting websites is that the favorites don’t win every single time.
For instance, the last time Roglič took part in the Criterium du Dauphine, he finished outside the top 10 despite being the #1 favorite before the race with the odds of 2.25. Instead, Daniel Martinez won the title, the cyclist whose pre-race odds were longer than 100.00.
If the favorites are going to fail again, who will finish first in the 2022 race? Right now, there are a couple of contenders that come to mind, starting with 7-time Grand Tour winner Chris Froome.
It wouldn’t be an overstatement to say the Criterium de Dauphine is one of the races that define Chris Frome’s career. He’s got some fantastic memories from the event, which he’s won three times. Unfortunately, he also has some horrible memories.
I’m talking about the crash he had during the 2019 event, which resulted in a fractured femur, elbow, and ribs.
Now a 37-year-old, Froome hasn’t won a major race since the crash, although his form seems to be improving. On May 31, Froome finished in the #11 place in the 2022 Mercan’Tour Classic Alpes-Maritimes – his best result in three years.
The world’s no.1-ranked cyclist Tadej Pogačar will not participate in the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine. Instead, his teammate Brandon McNulty will headline the UAE Team Emirates roster.
Sure, the American is nowhere near his Slovenian teammate in terms of career achievements. However, McNulty has been superb since the start of the year. So far, he’s won two one-day races and one stage at the 2022 Paris-Nice.
Third victory of the season after the same scenario, attack from far and don't look back. Brandon McNulty wins stage 5 of @ParisNice after a 40 km solo raid! Without Pogačar in the team, McNulty will be the UAE Team Emirates’ main weapon in the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine. If these guys want their team to win, they will need to work hard to help McNulty pass the finish line before anyone else.
My Criterium du Dauphine Prediction for 2022
So, who will win the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine? I think Primož Roglič needs to be considered the #1 favorite. After all, he’s one of the best riders of the generation. Sure, this might not be his favorite race, but that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t love to win it.
Roglič is my top Criterium du Dauphine betting pick. Even if he doesn’t win the race, I’m certain we will see him get onto the podium.
If you agree with me, all you got to do is wait for the Criterium du Dauphine odds to come out, after which you can back Roglič to win the yellow jersey. In the meantime, why not visit our sports blog for more gambling content.
