2022-23 A-League Betting Odds

A-LEAGUE ODDS

All the best soccer betting apps forecast a close-fought battle for the 2022-23 A-League Championship. With the top three favorites priced between 4.00 and 6.00 – and the top five favorites priced below 10.00 – we are set for a close title race.

Melbourne City is the bookies’ favorite. Not only have the 2020-21 champions finished atop the ladder for the past two seasons, but they have also reached each of the previous three Grand Finals.

Melbourne Victory and Western United are also expected to mount a serious Championship challenge. Victory won two titles in four seasons between 2014-15 and 2017-18, while Western triumphed last season.

Sydney FC and Macarthur FC are in the mix, too. The Sky Blues clinched three crowns in four seasons between 2016-17 and 2019-20. As for the Bulls, they reached the semi-finals in their debut campaign before finishing the seventh last season.

Western Sydney Wanderers, Adelaide United, Newcastle Jets, and Central Coast Mariners are viewed as the best of the rest. Brisbane Roar, Wellington Phoenix, and Perth Glory are the clear outsiders.

Now that we’re up to speed on the 2022 A-League odds, it’s time to look closely at the leading Championship contenders.

Analyzing the A-League Betting Favorites for 2022-23

When it comes to predicting who will win the 2022-23 A-League title, it only makes sense to start by analyzing the bookies’ favorites, right?

According to the early 2022-23 A-League betting odds, Melbourne City, Melbourne Victory, Western United, and Sydney FC are the frontrunners. So, let’s inspect the teams priced between 4.00 and 7.50.

Melbourne City

MELBOURNE CITY
  • 2022-23 A-League Odds: 4.00
  • Last Season: 1st (Premiers)
  • A-League Championships: 1

The reigning premiers were the only side to win more than 50% of their regular-season games in 2021-22. Melbourne City claimed 14 victories in 26 outings, registering seven draws and five defeats along the way.

Although Patrick Kisnorbo’s boys failed to defend their Championship crown, they cemented their status as the team to beat in Australia’s top tier. I mean, you don’t reach three straight Grand Finals without being a good team.

Kisnorbo’s boys were the top scorers by some distance last season, netting 55 goals in 26 regular-season games (2.12 goals per game). Unsurprisingly, Jamie Maclaren was the star of the show once again.

RECENT A-LEAGUE GOLDEN BOOT WINNERS
Season Player Club Goals Goals Per Game
2016-17 Jamie Maclaren Brisbane Roar 19 0.73
2017-18 Bobô Sydney FC 27 1.00
2018-19 Roy Krishna Wellington 18 0.69
2019-20 Jamie Maclaren Melbourne City 22 0.96
2020-21 Jamie Maclaren Melbourne City 25 1.04
2021-22 Jamie Maclaren Melbourne City 15 0.63

Not only has Maclaren won each of the last three Golden Boots, but he has also won four of the previous six. There is no denying that City possesses the league’s deadliest striker.

Alongside Maclaren, Mathew Leckie (9 goals, 4 assists), Marco Tilio (8 goals, 8 assists), and Andrew Nabbout (7 goals, 9 assists) starred throughout the previous campaign – dispelling the notion that City is a one-man team.

Having clinched two Premierships and one Championship across the past two seasons, Melbourne City looks set to enjoy another successful campaign.

Melbourne Victory

MELBOURNE VICTORY
  • 2022-23 A-League Odds: 5.00
  • Last Season: 2nd (Semi-Finals)
  • A-League Championships: 4

Melbourne Victory’s transformation under Tony Popovic has been a joy to watch.

In 2020-21, the Boys in Blue recorded their worst-ever A-League campaign – finishing rock bottom of the ladder with 17 defeats to their name. Last season, they climbed to second place after losing just four of their 26 regular-season games.

Popovic’s men ended the regular season on a 15-game unbeaten streak, winning seven of their final nine encounters. Granted, they fell to Western United in the semi-finals. But they exceeded all expectations in 2021-22.

Believe it or not, Popovic will be able to call upon Portuguese legend Nani next season. The former Manchester United star has joined the club during the offseason, strengthening Victory’s chances of glory.

The four-time A-League champions last lifted the trophy back in 2017-18. After several seasons in the wilderness, they are ready to challenge for the top prize again.

Last season, the Boys in Blue achieved the best defensive record by a considerable margin. You know what they say – offense wins games; defense wins championships.

Western United

Western United
  • 2022-23 A-League Odds: 6.00
  • Last Season: 3rd (Champions)
  • A-League Championships: 1

Western United came from nowhere to claim their maiden A-League Championship last season. After mocking the 2021-22 A-League Championship odds, Aloisi’s men will fancy their chances of defending their title.

The Victorians finished fifth in their debut A-League campaign before dropping to tenth place in 2020-21. Last season, they finished third – four points behind first-place Melbourne City – before going all the way in the Finals Series.

Many believed that Western would struggle without the goals of Besart Berisha, but Aleksandar Prijovic filled Berisha’s boots. The Serbian striker bagged 13 goals and six assists during the previous campaign, finishing just behind Maclaren on the Golden Boot leaderboard.

That said, Western’s overreliance on Prijovic is a cause for concern. Given that none of his teammates scored more than five goals last season, he will be expected to carry the team once again in 2022-23.

Since the inception of the A-League back in 2005, only two clubs have claimed back-to-back Championships. The 2022 A-League odds suggest that Western can achieve the feat, but it won’t be easy.

Sydney FC

Sydney FC
  • 2022-23 A-League Odds: 7.50
  • Last Season: 8th
  • A-League Championships: 5

Not so long ago, Sydney FC was the dominant force in Australian soccer. Between 2016-17 and 2019-20, the Sky Blues won three Championships and three Premierships in four seasons.

The Sydneysiders also reached the 2020-21 Grand Final. Although they suffered a 3-1 defeat to Melbourne City on that occasion, they are still the most successful club in the history of the A-League.

MOST SUCCESSFUL CLUBS IN A-LEAGUE HISTORY (CURRENT CLUBS ONLY)
Club Championships Premierships
Sydney FC 5 4
Melbourne Victory 4 3
Brisbane Roar 4 2
Perth Glory 2 4
Adelaide United 1 2
Central Coast Mariners 1 2
Brisbane Roar 1 2
Melbourne City 1 2
Western United 1
Newcastle Jets 1
Western Sydney Wanderers 1

However, Sydney FC endured a campaign to forget last season. After winning just eight of their 26 games, they finished eighth on the ladder and missed the Finals Series altogether.

At the end of the day, I can’t see Steve Corica’s boys performing as badly as they did last season. Having dominated the league in recent years, they should be able to challenge for the Championship in 2022-23.

Evaluating the Chasing Pack for the 2022-23 A-League Season

With Macarthur FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Adelaide United, Newcastle Jets, and Central Coast Mariners priced between 9.50 and 17.00, there is no shortage of value in the 2022 A-League odds.

Adelaide, Newcastle, and Central Coast have all won the A-League Championship in the past 15 years, and the Wanderers have won both the Premiership and AFC Champions League. Can the chasing pack cause a stir in 2022-23?

Macarthur FC (9.50)

Macarthur enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in the A-League, finishing sixth before reaching the semi-finals. However, the Bulls suffered from a bad “second-season syndrome” and missed the Finals Series in 2021-22.

Ante Milicic parted ways with the club at the end of the previous campaign, opening the door for Dwight Yorke. Of course, there is no doubting Yorke’s ability as a player. But this is his first managerial role. So, it is difficult to predict how Macarthur will fare next season.

Western Sydney Wanderers (11.00)

Western Sydney has failed to reach the Finals Series since 2016-17. Following five successive finishes between seventh and tenth place, the Wanderers will be desperate to make amends for years of shortcomings.

The Sydneysiders won just six of their 26 games last season, registering nine draws and 11 defeats. They also managed to win only one of their final ten encounters, so they must make vast improvements if they want to compete for silverware.

Adelaide United (13.00)

I really like the look of Adelaide United’s odds to win the A-League title in 2022-23. Adelaide finished just two points behind Western United last season – and Western won the Championship! It is also worth noting that Adelaide pushed Melbourne City all the way in the semi-finals.

Captain Craig Goodwin starred throughout the previous campaign, racking up eight goals and six assists. If Ben Warland, Harry Van der Saag, and the other new signings rise to Goodwin’s level, the Reds will be a force to be reckoned with.

Newcastle Jets (13.00)

Scoring goals was not a problem for Newcastle last season. Thanks to the exploits of Beka Mikeltadze (12 goals, 2 assists), Valentino Yuel (5 goals, 4 assists), and Daniel Penha (4 goals, 11 assists), the Jets were the third-highest scorers in 2021-22.

That said, they also finished the campaign with the fourth-worst defensive record. If Arthur Papas can transform the Jets’ fortunes at the back, they have more than enough attacking firepower to reach the Finals Series.

Central Coast Mariners (17.00)

The Mariners secured back-to-back top-five finishes in 2020-21 and 2021-22. However, they fell in the Elimination Finals on both occasions. Have they got what it takes to bounce back and mount a challenge for the title?

It feels like Jason Cummings holds the key to Central Coast’s chances of success. The ex-Nottingham Forest striker bagged ten goals and six assists last season, so he will be expected to fire the Coasties to glory in 2022-23.

A-League Prediction and Championship Pick for 2022-23

Having analyzed all the top contenders for the 2022-23 A-League Championship, I can’t see Western United defending their crown. Granted, Aloisi’s men enjoyed a stellar 2021-22 campaign. But there are stronger teams in the league.

Naturally, Melbourne City will be a popular pick for 2022-23. The reigning premiers have made it to each of the past three Grand Finals, so I expect them to go deep into the Finals Series once again.

That said, I’m backing Melbourne Victory to reclaim the Championship for the first time since 2017-18. The four-time champs finished a solitary point behind City last season and posted the best defensive record by some distance.

It is extremely difficult to ignore Victory’s 15-game unbeaten streak at the end of the previous campaign. Popovic has totally transformed the team, so I expect the Boys in Blue to reign supreme next year.
