2020 Online Slot Sequels

When you see a trailer for a new movie that’s a sequel to an original, you’re probably hesitant to get too excited.

Quite a few follow-up films can be disappointing (Speed, Jaws, Grease…). But in the online slots world, everything is different. Themes and features can be re-used and, for the most part, they turn into a more exciting and engaging slot game.

So, I’ve put together a list of some recently released online slot sequels that are better than the originals.

As you’ll soon see, some of the revamps are bigger and better by adding paylines, such as Gonzo’s Quest jumping from 20 lines to a 117,649 Megaways slot in its 2020 renovated version.

But you don’t necessarily need to change payout possibilities, as you’ll see in 300 Shields Extreme. One of my picks even lowers the payline count and still gives players something unique and worthy of attention.

If you enjoy the singing skulls in Esqueleto Explosivo or the wild takeovers in Sticky Bandits, then you’ll want to see what their online slot sequels have to offer, as I think you’ll be impressed.

Sticky Bandits Wild Return

The outlaws are back, but they’ve received a makeover as Quickspin’s Sticky Bandits Wild Return is a notable follow-up to the original Sticky Bandits.

In the first version, you’ve got 30 paylines on a 5 x 5 screen with 0.15 to 90.00 betting. The design is simple and almost cartoonish. However, the massive wild feature is enough to keep you sticking around, as well as those wilds in the bonus round. There are only two, but one covers the second and third reel, and the other takes the fourth and fifth positions.

When both land, you’ve got 30 guaranteed five-of-a-kinds as everything, but the first reel is blanketed in wild symbols.

Higher Stakes and Payline Count

In the new release, Sticky Bandits Wild Return, there’s a lot more to the presentation and the gameplay. The board is reduced to a 5 x 4, but the payline count goes up to 40, with 0.20 to 100.00 stakes.

Instead of just one primary feature in Wild Return, there’s a bigger and badder bonus round, as shots fired at bandits turn them into sticky wilds. The top X500 payout isn’t in the Lucky Shot bonus, though. Instead, it’s hidden within a tiny slot machine that circles the fifth reel.

Two Slots in One

When the mini-slot appears, you get up to three coins to feed it. As it’s a one-armed bandit, the pull of a lever sets the reels into motion. You’ll recognize some familiar fruit and bar symbols, but it’s three red sevens that are behind the number one prize.

Oversized outlaws and wild action carry over from one game to the next, but that’s about it, as the criminals wreak havoc in an entirely different way in Sticky Bandits Wild Return.

Gonzo’s Quest Megaways

Adding the Megaways designation to the end of one of the most well-known online slots, Gonzo’s Quest takes a 20-payline game and cranks it up to 117,649 ways to win. Now, that’s quite a change!

Gonzo’s Quest was released in 2011 and has been on the radar of online casinos and players for years because it kicked off the avalanche phenomenon. Explorer Spanish Conquistador Gonzalo Pizzaro is an unusual model for a slot theme, but it worked.

The search for virtual gold features symbols turned into stone that drop, crumble, and disappear only to be replaced by more, as well as an increasing multiplier.

Unbreakable Wilds and Earthquakes

The new 2020 mega version retains most of the images from the first game but adds a few extra features in addition to the thousands of ways to win. Unbreakable wilds stay put despite the power of the avalanches. Then, every so often, the screen is shaken by an earthquake that’s discriminating, as it only eliminates low pay symbols.

While there’s nothing wrong with the original, Gonzo’s Quest Megaways is a better online slot sequel as there’s better entertainment value, more on-screen surprises, and the payout potential is also significant. It jumps from 2,500 to X20,000 courtesy of the 117,649 ways to win.

You won’t see stakes rise, though, as Gonzo’s Quest Megaways sticks to a limited range of 0.20 to 4.00.

Knockout Football Rush

For my next pick of on an online slot sequel that’s better than the original, I’m going with Knockout Football Rush. But you may disagree with me on this selection, as it’s a reversal of the formula I started with follow-up games with more paylines and features.

Payline Reversal

Whereas the original Knockout Football has 243 ways to win, Knockout Football Rush is limited to just six paylines.

Let me explain why I think it’s worth your time, though. The minimum bet drops from 0.20 to 0.10 when you go with the rush version. Although the maximum is less also, you can still stake up to 2,000.00 per spin. Keep in mind that with fewer winning ways, the payouts are better. So, it’s a high volatility game that could pay off quickly with the right outcome.

The best-case scenario is to cover the nine spots on the 3 x 3 board with wild footballs (soccer balls). That happens with random penalty kicks. You could be in the middle of a game, and all of a sudden, the reels are swept aside. Now you have an unobstructed view of the field and the ball that’s kicked in your direction.

Random Penalty Kicks

Every penalty kick scores with a wild that lands on the bottom row.

From there, it’s going to bounce around for a bit, moving up one row at a time until it’s out of play. The wild action doesn’t stop the kicker from doing his job, as more wild footballs can come sailing in your direction. A game-winning kick would fill the screen with nine wilds for an X60 multiplier bonus. But even three wilds will double your payouts.

That’s the extent of all of the game action, though. So, I’m giving this slot sequel a spot on the list as it’s an ideal game for mobile play. It has smaller reels and simplified, yet exciting, gameplay. You don’t have to pay too much attention, but it’s more fun if you do, as the penalty kicks can lead to excellent rewards.

Esqueleto Explosivo 2

You don’t need me to tell you that the “2” at the end of Esqueleto Explosivo indicates that it’s a follow-up game. It’s also another online slot sequel that’s better than the original for a few reasons.

In Esqueleto Explosivo 2, the sugar skulls are back along with their singing and exploding abilities. Every win on the reels prompts an explosion and replacement re-spin that’s accompanied by an increasing multiplier, just like the first slot.

While those bobbing heads cover the entertainment aspect, there’s more to the follow-up version that’ll keep you engaged.

Double Multipliers and a New Bonus Round

The sequel takes the explosions to a whole new level as you’re going from a 17-payline slot to 99 connected pay ways. While the betting stays consistent with the same 0.10 to 100.00 range, there’s a free spins bonus round added to Esqueleto Explosivo 2, and a higher-value multiplier comes along with it.

Esqueleto Explosivo relied solely on the re-spins for free spins, but three bonus skulls will send you in search of the impressive X64 multiplier in a ten-game round.

So, you’ve got 82 additional ways to win, the X64 multiplier as compared to X32, and ten free spins up for grabs in a bonus round that’s missing from the original Esqueleto Explosivo. I would say that I’ve presented my evidence well enough to declare Esqueleto Explosivo 2 as another online slot sequel that’s better than the original.

300 Shields Extreme

I can’t be critical of the original 300 Shields, as it has established itself as one of the best online slots for payout potential, and it’s all about the X300 multiplier. The bloody bonus battle could take a while, but it’s worth it if you get to that impressive 300 times payout boost.

Well, the X300 is back in 300 Shields Extreme, so we’re off to a good start. While the online slot sequel still emphasizes the bonus round and doesn’t amp up the base game spins, it gives you a few extra payouts and options which take it to the next level.

Scatter Value to the Extreme

In 300 Shields Extreme, the scatter pay, which was 100 in the original version, jumps to 2,500 in the sequel. Additionally, two scatter shields will get you 50 credits. So, at least there’s a consolation prize for just missing out on bonus activation.

When you do head into battle and vie for your Warrior Wins, you’ll find the same rewards are waiting for you. It’s a four-level bonus round that starts with five free spins and an X2 multiplier on wild-enhanced combinations. But you’ve got to collect the same shields in the Extreme version, as you do in the first release.

  • Two shields = five additional spins and a multiplier increase to X5
  • Six shields = five additional spins and a multiplier increase to X25
  • 12 shields = five additional spins and a multiplier increase to X300

Aside from the scatter pay, everything seems quite similar, doesn’t it? Well, there are a few other little twists to the Extreme experience.

Buy Your Way Into Battle

While the sequel retains the same 25-line set-up, the paylines are fixed. So, you have to be all-in for 25 credits when you play 300 Shields Extreme. But, the scatter pays and two additional options make it well worth it.

This follow-up game has a Buy Pass selection. So, if you’re antsy to start fighting for shields, you can pay 60 times your total bet, and you head right into battle. Additionally, you can potentially double your base game wins in a gamble-up game. You don’t have to participate, but it’s another strategic decision that you can make when 300 Shields goes Extreme.

I think you’ll agree that the old adage “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” doesn’t apply to online slot games. Each of the five follow-up titles resulted from top-notch originals.

Software developers are continually producing new and innovative games that impress with unique features and high-tech visuals. Now you can see that they also find creative twists on slots that are already impressive.

You could select from any of the five originals or sequels and be entertained, as well as have access to excellent payout potential. So, even though I have a five-game list, I’m actually presenting ten slot game recommendations.

The 2020 online slot sequels may be better than the originals, but the first ones aren’t too shabby either. Check out the best online casinos to give them a go.
