Isaiah Simmons 2020 NFL Draft

Star Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons is one of the best defensive prospects heading into the 2020 NFL Draft. If need weren’t an issue, there is a debate that he could be the top overall talent teams should be competing for.

In terms of speed, overall athleticism, instincts, and upside, there aren’t many prospects who can rival what Simmons brings to the table.

As things stand, however, Joe Burrow is a lock to be the #1 overall pick, and it looks like Chase Young will slide in at the two spot. Of course, what might end up happening doesn’t necessarily align with what should happen.

The top 2020 NFL Draft betting websites are offering Isaiah Simmons props, which ask when and where he might be taken this year.

In trying to predict where Isaiah Simmons gets drafted, let’s break down the 4 teams that need to take Isaiah Simmons in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Washington Redskins

Chase Young is the big name the Redskins are tied to, while there have even been whispers that they could shock everyone and upgrade at quarterback via Tua Tagovailoa.

Former Washington running back Clinton Portis has gone on record in saying the Redskins should take Simmons, though. While that goes against popular opinion, Portis may be onto something here.

Washington really already has two terrific edge rushers in Ryan Kerrigan and Montez Sweat, so adding an elite sideline-to-sideline difference-maker like Simmons could honestly be the right call.

Detroit Lions

I have to mention Detroit here, as I actually predicted they’d take Simmons in my Lions mock draft not too long ago.

The departure of Darius Slay does make the addition of often-mocked Jeff Okudah a logical choice, but Simmons would also be a great pick.

Detroit did add Desmond Trufant as a response to trading away Slay, while they do lack a high-level linebacker like Simmons.

The Lions also pick third overall and are run by the defensive-minded Matt Patricia, so if he believes Simmons is the better player and can make a bigger impact, it’s a move he should make.

Carolina Panthers

Not every team that wants or needs Isaiah Simmons can get him, but Carolina badly needs him and with the 7th pick could still get him.

I figured as much in my Carolina Panthers 2020 mock draft, especially since there is a giant hole on the inside of their defense after the retirement of Luke Kuechly.

Simmons would be the perfect replacement for Kuechly, and it’s not that arguable that the Panthers have a greater need than linebacker at the moment.

Green Bay Packers

I’m sure just about every team wouldn’t mind snagging a physical specimen like Simmons, but it’s arguable nobody needs him more than Green Bay.

The Packers let Blake Martinez walk in free agency and didn’t make much noise on the open market, beyond bringing in the often-injured Christian Kirksey.

That’s a great signing on paper, but the Packers still lack that ferocious presence in the middle of the field and need a second linebacker to pair with their new arrival.

It’d take a huge move up in the first round, but need may trump logic here.

Where Will Isaiah Simmons Be Drafted?

The big question here isn’t just who will draft Isaiah Simmons but also precisely where he might land in the 2020 NFL Draft.

His talent gives him a slight chance of being a surprise pick at #2 overall, while surrounding talent and team needs could push him to the bottom of the top 10.

The latter possibility could put someone like the Packers in play, but right now, what is most logical is the Panthers get their long-term replacement for the now-retired Luke Kuechly.
